Buckman Elementary is in Southeast Portland. It is an Arts Focus school, grades Kindergarten through 5.

The goals of the Buckman Marimba Ensemble project are to:

• Integrate marimba instruction and songs into Buckman's music education curriculum
• Expand and sustain before and after school marimba classes and the Buckman Marimba Band
• Provide hands-on experience with concepts like the mathematical ratios of polyrythms and the physics of sound production
• Increase Buckman students' understanding of the geography, languages and culture of Zimbabwe
• Build a new network of student marimba bands in Portland
