The Buckman Marimba
story
The Buckman Marimba Ensemble started as a dream of MyLinda and Fred King, parents of a Buckman student. MyLinda teaches marimba in many Portland area schools and felt that a marimba program was a good fit for an Arts Focus school that had lost all funding for instrumental music. With the support of many parents, the P.T.A. and former principal Melissa Dragich, funding was secured to begin our program in Sept. of 2007. In October of that year we were awarded a First Octave Grant to expand our program and add another marimba. Currently Buckman has three after-school marimba ensembles, including an evening class for parents and teachers. All of these classes are offered through the SUN Program (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods). |
